I am re-standing for election as a director of the Association of MBAs.

Here is my election statement.

STEVE HOOKER (Purchasing Manager Burton’s Biscuits)

My objective is STILL to make AMBA a world class organisation that members, globally, want to join and remain.

Over the last three years I have enjoyed my time helping the organisation advance. Having said that, AMBA still has a lot to do in today’s competitive world and I wish to finish the job.

What will I do? - Create value for members.

  • 1. Increase the awareness of the value of AMBA accredited MBAs to the business world. We have sweated blood and tears for our MBAs, we need its value augmented.
  • 2. Improve business virtual networking by use of blogs, webprofiles, webcasts and webmeetings.
  • 3. Boost local Face-2-Face networking.
  • 4. Develop strategic alliances with other business schools and companies.
  • 5. Advance the career development and support services.
  • 6. Provide ongoing training and development.
  • 7. Increase the commercial orientation of AMBA.
  • 8. Create special interest groups e.g. Finance
  • 9. Further increase dialogue between the association and all members. e.g. through “regular meet the staff and board sessions”. Please feel free to contact me directly via steve@hookeruk.com with any views you have.
  • 10. Use the strength, skills and experience of the UK base as a springboard to grow. Whilst business is global, the Association membership is 85% UK based. My experience (my membership lapsed when in France), and that of others I have spoken to, shows that we have poor international membership retention.
  • On a personal level I am a great believer in networking so feel free to link into me, I am on most business networks, though most active on www.linkedin.com.

    Experience

I have a degree in Chemistry and a M.B.A from the University of Strathclyde. I have worked in world class organisations in the food, fmcg, retail and chemical industries. This included working for Mars (Masterfoods) and Kingfisher/B&Q. My experience covers all functional departments, including, Plant Management, Business Development, R&D, Technical Management, Training, Internal Consultancy, Purchasing, Project and Change Management.

I worked and lived in France for 10 years and I have led teams based in Austria, China, France, Holland and Germany. In addition, I have led global teams and been responsible for Business Development in Asia, Africa, and Ireland

    Skills

I currently work for Burton’s Foods the second largest biscuit manufacturer in the UK. I work on strategic projects to either reduce costs or increase our product range. This has involved work in the Middle East, Eastern and Southern Europe, with, effectively our competitors.

I have a strong record in developing and implementing strategy.  Many times in my career I have been asked to go in and solve business opportunities (problems!).

I am a great believer in Networking; one of the reasons I am standing is to further develop my personal network and, as networking is a mutual activity, facilitate the development of AMBA members networks.
